Massacre

The lyrics describe a brutal battle in which hundreds of unnamed people are killed. The mood moves from bleak descriptions of the fighting to an anguished question about how such violence can happen in a world where God is believed to exist. The ending returns to the dead lying in the open, leaving the loss unresolved.

“Below zero” suggests a place or situation at its most hopeless, not necessarily a literal temperature. The comparison to “sleeping buffalo” makes the victims seem exposed and helpless, while “death has no companion” presents death as isolating. The “hole in the wall” offers an image of escape or passage, but the man who goes through it is called a coward; the lyrics leave open whether this is judgment or simply a bitter observation.

The song also questions authority and the use of religion to justify violence: a general acts to defend what he fears, and weapons are used “in His name.” This does not prove that the lyrics reject faith itself; they may instead condemn people who invoke God while causing slaughter. “Heroes” is similarly complicated: it honors the dead, yet “unknown” suggests they may be forgotten by those who sent them to fight.
