A Thousand Kisses Deep

The lyrics describe a life of brief chances, pleasure, and eventual loss. At first, the speaker seems caught up in a lively world of competition and attraction, where success feels possible. But a “winning streak” cannot last, and the speaker must face defeat. The mood becomes more reflective and resigned, as the speaker looks back on choices, desire, and what was left undone.

Several images suggest this change. “The ponies run” and “the odds” evoke betting, so life can feel like a gamble: a person may win for a time, but cannot control the outcome. “Boogie street” seems to mean a return to a familiar, perhaps restless or pleasure-seeking life. The sea images—“no oceans left” and a “remnant fleet”—suggest exhaustion, as if the speaker has run out of possibilities and is accepting a shipwreck rather than continuing to fight.

The repeated phrase “a thousand kisses deep” is deliberately mysterious. It may suggest being immersed in intense love or desire, but it also carries a sense of depth, memory, and emotional cost. Likewise, “you live your life as if it’s real” could be ironic: perhaps life feels like a performance, or perhaps the speaker is urging someone to treat it as meaningful despite inevitable defeat. The lyrics allow both readings, holding tenderness and regret together.
