this is me trying

The speaker describes struggling to adapt after losing confidence and falling short of earlier expectations. They regret past choices and worry that someone may not welcome them back, yet they still show up and try to make contact. The repeated admission, “this is me trying,” sounds both like an explanation and a small plea to have their effort recognized.

The “shiny wheels” that are now “rusting” suggest that former success or promise has faded. The speaker’s fear of going “all the way down” may hint at a moment of serious despair, though the lyrics leave its exact meaning open. Calling themselves an “open wound” conveys how exposed and emotionally raw they feel around other people. The image of a person as a “flashback in a film reel” suggests that memories of them keep replaying.

The song presents trying as meaningful even when it does not erase regret or guarantee reconciliation. The speaker admits to anger, drinking, and missed opportunities, but also describes choosing not to drink while opening up to someone. This could be read as a fragile step toward change. We cannot know whether the relationship will be repaired, or what the speaker’s full circumstances are; the focus is on the uncertain effort to return and be heard.
