She went west to be an actress back in 1965
With the hopes and dreams of a girl turned 21
Now she's waiting there on tables for the nickels and the dimes
While she's waiting on the break that never comes
Well it's a lonesome highway to the end of the rainbow
Paved with broken hearts of those who once believed
But I'm never gonna give up my dreams I'll follow
Through the storms of life 'round the curves that wind and weave
Down the darkest road wherever they may lead
ย
Well he headed up to Nashville with a notebook full of rhymes
Down on Music Row he knocked on every door
But no one cared to listen so he works assembly line
And he feels there's no use trying anymore
Well it's a lonesome highway to the end of the rainbow
Paved with broken hearts of those who once believed
But I'm never gonna give up my dreams I'll follow
Through the storms of life 'round the curves that wind and weave
Down the darkest road wherever they may lead
ย
Now he played in all the juke joints from New York to L.A
And he hoped each one would be a stepping stone
To a life of adulation it grew harder every day
So he finally gave it up and just went home
Now it's a lonesome highway to the end of the rainbow
Paved with broken hearts of those who once believed
But I'm never gonna give up my dreams I'll follow
Through the storms of life 'round the curves that wind and weave
Down the darkest road wherever they may lead
Down the darkest road wherever they may lead
