The lyrics tell a comic story about a man who believes that becoming muscular will make Hilda love him. He starts out insecure about his body, trains intensely, and eventually gains enormous muscles. But when he visits Hilda, he discovers that she is married to a thin man. His effort has not won her over, and the song’s confidence in the appeal of muscles turns into a joke about changing fashions and misplaced hopes.
The opening comparison to Einstein and Schwarzenegger is an amusing mismatch: the speaker says he has Schwarzenegger’s brain and Einstein’s body, reversing the qualities associated with each famous figure. “Marmor, Stein und Eisen schmilzt” (“marble, stone, and iron melt”) exaggerates how powerful muscles are supposed to be, echoing the idea that people will be overcome by a strong body. The “fitness torture chamber” also makes the gym sound like a frightening place, while the speaker’s body eventually resembles a huge, oily cake.
The song playfully mocks both bodybuilding and the belief that appearance guarantees romantic success. Its chorus first insists that strong men are always popular, then later says they are no longer in fashion—before returning to the earlier claim. This contradiction may be part of the joke: trends and attraction are unpredictable, and the singer’s boastful certainty cannot explain Hilda’s choice. The humor is affectionate but also self-deprecating, since the would-be bodybuilder’s transformation leaves him powerful-looking yet no closer to the relationship he wanted.
