Heroes

The lyrics describe two people facing forces that may separate or threaten them. At first, they imagine themselves as king and queen, able to overcome opposition and feel powerful together. The mood is bold and romantic, but it becomes more vulnerable: the singer recalls danger, admits that they may be “nothing,” and wonders whether their hope is partly a lie. Even so, they hold on to the possibility of being brave together for a limited time.

The imagined crowns suggest a brief escape from ordinary powerlessness: for a day, the lovers can feel important and in control. The image of dolphins swimming evokes freedom and ease, perhaps a wish to move through danger without being trapped by it. Later, the wall and gunfire make the threat more concrete. Their kiss seems defiant, as if intimacy can offer a moment of shelter even when the danger has not disappeared.

“Heroes” may not mean people who permanently defeat their enemies. The repeated idea of being heroes for just one day makes their courage temporary, yet still meaningful. The lyrics leave the lovers’ situation unclear: they may be in real danger, struggling against social or personal barriers, or expressing a more general fear of losing one another. The ending is especially uncertain, balancing hope for a safer moment against the possibility that staying together is not safe.
