Lyrics
I was running outside to play
Grabbed an old hat from the rack
Grandma yelled out from the kitchen,
"Boy don't touch that dirty old hat"
I said, "Why Grandma doesn't look like much,
Just looks like all the others"
Said, "Son, that's more than a dirty old hat,
That's your Grandpa's cover"
It has stories to tell, but it cannot make a noise
It's seen so many things, but it doesn't have a voice
It may be hanging on the rack, just like all the others
But it's all that we have left of the man who wore the cover
It was all that came back from Grandpa
From that war in '69
Back then it was new and green
But it's worn down over time
We've got things of his that we cannot hold
Like stories of his actions, so brave and so bold
Recollections of family and loving one another
But his memories live on through that folded flag and cover
It has stories to tell, but it cannot make a noise
It's seen so many things, but it doesn't have a voice
It may be hanging on the rack, just like all the others
But it's all that we have left of the man who wore the cover
Grandma told me that story, 20 years ago today
And I still have that coat rack
Where that cover's on display
It has stories to tell, but it cannot make a noise
It's seen so many things, but it doesn't have a voice
It may be hanging on the rack, just like all the others
But it's all that we have left of the man who wore the cover
So let's give thanks and praise to the men who wore the cover
