Lyrics meaning

The speaker is heartbroken after a woman leaves him, and he responds by following her south along a river. At first, his sorrow feels overwhelming: he imagines his tears filling the river and says he will stay where he is forever. As the search continues through several towns, however, he grows tired and finally gives up, recognizing that the riverโ€”and perhaps the journey itselfโ€”seems to matter more to her than he does.

The river is both a real route through the places he names and an image of his continuing pursuit. Saying that his tears will โ€œfloodโ€ it exaggerates his grief, while teaching the willow to cry and the clouds to hide the sky makes nature seem to share his sadness. โ€œFollowed my bluesโ€ means that he follows his misery, as well as following the river south.

The lyrics mix comic exaggeration with genuine pain. The speakerโ€™s dramatic promise to wait until death contrasts with his eventual admission that he has had enough. The womanโ€™s feelings remain unclear: she may simply be moving on, or the speaker may be projecting his heartbreak onto the river. The ending suggests acceptance, but it does not tell us whether he has truly let go.
