Lyrics meaning

The singer describes loving someone who does not appear to return that love. Other people may think the relationship is real, but he knows it is only an appearance. He longs for the other person to care for him someday, and his feelings move between hopeful dreams of a shared future and the painful recognition that those dreams may not come true.

โ€œPeople see us everywhereโ€ suggests that, from the outside, they may look like a couple. โ€œOnly make believeโ€ means something imagined or pretended rather than real: the closeness others see is not matched by genuine love. The repeated โ€œprayerโ€ expresses a deep wish, while the imagined wedding ring stands for the commitment and future he hopes to have.

The lyrics convey intense devotion, but they also suggest that this devotion may be one-sided. Saying the other person โ€œrule[s]โ€ his soul makes his love sound overwhelming, perhaps even beyond his control. Still, the song does not explain exactly what the other person feels or why they seem not to care. Its central sadness lies in the gap between the singerโ€™s private hopes and the relationship as he understands it.
