Sleight of Hand

The lyrics portray a man trapped in an ordinary routine, going through familiar motions without feeling fully present. He begins to notice a gap between the person he is and the person he seems to have become. As he drifts through work and daily life, the mood grows uneasy and detached; by the end, he returns to normal, but his thoughts and questions remain unresolved.

Several images suggest this disconnection. He looks at his hands without remembering how his life changed, as if his own actions belong to someone else. The phrase “sleight of hand” usually means a skillful trick, so here it may suggest that change happened so quietly he did not notice it. His familiar road feels like a book read “in his sleep”: predictable, repeated, and experienced without attention. Hiding in the radio while others go home also hints that he feels separate from ordinary life.

The “clip-on world” may be a small, temporary version of reality he can remove or leave behind, though the image is deliberately unclear. His goodbye “to himself” could express a wish to escape his current identity, or simply a moment of self-recognition. The lyrics do not explain what caused his drifting—age, circumstance, or something else—so the song leaves open whether this is a crisis or a passing awareness.
