Could've Been

The lyrics describe a person trying to accept that a romance did not become a real relationship. At first, the speaker asks for answers but suspects that being together is not possible. Memories and lonely moments bring back the feeling of what might have happened, even as the speaker knows they should not get emotionally involved. The mood shifts between longing and self-protection.

The repeated phrase “we could’ve been” means that the two people might have had a relationship, but circumstances or choices prevented it. Remembering a night in Miami makes the past feel vivid, while the other person contacting the speaker only when his partner is away suggests secrecy and an unequal arrangement. The speaker’s claim that the caring part inside is gone may be a way of trying to sound detached rather than proof that all feelings have disappeared.

The later section complicates the idea of missed possibility: the speaker imagines being more than a friend, but admits that at least one person is already “with somebody.” The lyrics therefore leave open whether this could ever have been a healthy relationship, or whether the speaker is idealizing it because it never fully happened.
