Dirty Diana

The lyrics tell the story of a man who recognizes a woman’s attempts to draw him into a sexual relationship but struggles to resist her. At first, he sounds confident that he will leave and remain faithful. As the story develops, however, he becomes caught up in the encounter and worries about his partner at home. The ending suggests that his partner may have discovered his infidelity, though the situation is not fully explained.

The repeated idea that Diana “trapped” him in her heart presents attraction as a kind of capture: he feels pulled in despite his earlier refusal. “After the curtain comes down” means after a performance ends, when the musicians are no longer onstage. Diana’s offer to help him “make me a star” suggests she is seeking access to fame and opportunity through the performers she approaches backstage.

The narrator describes Diana as manipulative, but his account also shows that he makes choices: he goes with her, then calls home only after the situation has escalated. So the song can be read both as a warning about temptation and as a story in which the narrator shifts blame away from himself. The final line about someone sleeping with his partner may be literal within the story, or a misunderstanding that leaves the outcome deliberately unclear.
