Ruby Red

The speaker invites Ruby to share an abundant meal and drink, presenting the evening as playful and sensual. The mood is teasing and confident, with repeated calls to Ruby that make the lyrics feel like a flirtatious refrain. By the end, the speaker shifts from describing food to openly wanting physical closeness.

The meal is more than a meal: oysters are described as an aphrodisiac, and the rich food and liqueur help create a suggestive atmosphere. “Better use your ruby head” sounds like a cheeky prompt to think or make a choice, while “lying in your ruby bed” links Ruby’s name and color to intimacy. The lines about starting at the top and ending at the bottom may hint at eating from a dish, but they also invite a playful, possibly sexual reading.

The lyrics deliberately mix appetite for food with desire for Ruby, so some phrases can carry both meanings at once. Their joking tone makes the speaker’s advances seem lighthearted, though the repeated invitations also reveal persistence. Ruby’s own feelings are not given, so the song shows the speaker’s desire without telling us whether it is returned.
