The speaker is attracted to someone and wants closeness, but he is wary of getting hurt. At first, he decides to leave rather than give his heart to a relationship he does not trust. When the other person asks him to stay, he reconsiders, yet he still chooses to wait for a love that feels more dependable. The mood shifts between desire, caution, and hope.

Several images express this struggle. “Pick my heart up off the floor” suggests recovering after emotional pain, while a river growing into an ocean implies a problem or feeling becoming much larger if left unchecked. “Giving you the blues” means making someone sad. The repeated phrase “have faith” points less to religious belief than to trust: trust in another person, or confidence that a better relationship may come.

The ending leaves the decision somewhat open. He says he needs someone to hold him, so he is not rejecting intimacy itself; he is trying to avoid repeating a painful pattern. His change of mind may mean he is willing to give this person another chance, but it does not prove that he fully trusts them.
