Lyrics meaning
The song tells a comic, darkly dramatic story. A weary prospector arrives in Fairbanks after years in the cold and is drawn into a saloon by a womanโs singing. He dances with her, not knowing she is promised to another man. The playful mood turns suddenly dangerous when Big Ed throws a knife, and the narrator imagines he may be buried in the frozen ground.
The repeated line about springtime still being forty below makes Alaska seem both harsh and strangely ordinary: even โspringโ offers no relief from the cold. The dance and animal imagesโa caribou crawl, a grizzly bear hug, and a Kodiak rugโgive the scene a rough, lively, exaggerated feel. โSix feet belowโ is a grim joke: it suggests being dead and buried, and echoes the earlier temperature line.
The narrator calls himself innocent, but the lyrics leave room to wonder whether he is merely naรฏve or has ignored a social boundary by reaching for Lil. The story does not tell us what happens after the knife is thrown; the final line presents death as a comic possibility rather than a fully described outcome. Its humor comes from the sharp contrast between the cheerful dance and the threat of violence.
