Lyrics meaning
The speaker is alone at a dance, watching someone from the past arrive with a new partner. Seeing this person briefly awakens hope and affection, but that hope gives way to hurt: the former lover seems focused on someone else and may not even remember their shared happiness. The emotional movement is from numb waiting, to a flutter of renewed feeling, and then to loneliness and resignation.
Several images make that change vivid. The music “like a feather” suggests something light and drifting through the room, while the speaker remains still. The heart described as “dead” seems to come alive for a moment when the old lover appears. By contrast, the speaker’s comparison of themself to an “old newspaper” suggests feeling discarded, unnoticed, or out of date. The wish to be a couple again is not presented as a realistic plan; the speaker calls it a delusion or impossible hope.
The repeated English plea, “Love me once again,” may sound hopeful, but in context it is also an expression of longing for something the speaker knows may not return. The lyrics do not tell us whether the former lover truly has forgotten the past or simply does not show recognition. What is clear is the painful contrast between the speaker’s lasting feelings and the other person’s apparent distance.
