I Hope

The speaker addresses an ex who was unfaithful. At first, she seems to wish him happiness with a new partner: she hopes they enjoy each other’s company, feel excited, and build a future together. But the repeated wish that the new partner will also cheat reveals the anger beneath those generous-sounding words. The song moves between imagining the ex’s happiness and wanting him to experience the same pain he caused.

Several images make the imagined relationship vivid. A song playing during a long drive suggests how a small moment can make someone think about a loved one. “Sparks” is a metaphor for sudden romantic excitement, while putting a “rock” on someone’s hand means buying an engagement ring. The image of waiting alone for a late-night phone call reverses the speaker’s own experience: she imagines the ex feeling anxious and betrayed.

The repeated “I hope” is deliberately double-edged. Some wishes sound sincere, while others are clearly sarcastic or vengeful. The speaker may want fairness—“what goes around” returning to him—more than she literally wants another person to cheat. Still, the lyrics do not resolve whether she hopes he suffers, learns empathy, or both. Her pain and bitterness remain closely connected.
