The speaker looks back on a night among people whose concern and politeness feel shallow or painful. He describes himself as needing attention and love, yet also as curious, playful, and less tired than the others. Several images suggest escape and distance. “Evaporated in a red cloud” makes the speaker’s departure seem sudden and dreamlike, while the “small openings of the night” hint at hidden ways out. The image of a guitar beginning where his fingers end suggests that music can take over when words or ordinary life reach their limit. His dog’s name, “Libero” (“free”), also carries a possible wish for freedom.

The song’s exaggerated possibilities—hiring a cannibal to teach him his distance from the stars, or crossing coral to reach a place called “goodbye”—may express restless imagination rather than literal plans. The repeated claim that he was less tired or more curious than the others sounds both defiant and self-aware. The speaker may be criticizing their well-meaning but distant sympathy, while also admitting that he sees himself as different. The ending leaves open whether drunkenness means alcohol, emotional excess, or simply a way of describing his intense state.
