The Gnome

The lyrics tell a playful, simple story about Grimble Crumble, a small gnome who usually stays indoors. He goes outside for an adventure, discovers the grass, sky, and river, and seems delighted by the wider world. The mood grows from cozy and sheltered to cheerful and curious, ending with a repeated exclamation of joy.

The gnomes’ routine of “eating, sleeping, drinking their wine” suggests a comfortable but narrow life. Grimble’s “big adventure” is modest: fresh air and time among nature are enough to make it feel exciting. The repeated invitation to look at the sky and river draws attention to ordinary things as sources of pleasure. “Winding, finding places to go” gives his wandering a light, exploratory feeling.

The song may be heard as a children’s-style fantasy, but its simplicity leaves room for a broader reading: stepping beyond familiar habits can make the world feel newly vivid. The made-up word “Ooomray” sounds like a gnomes’ celebratory cry, though its exact meaning is not explained. The story does not suggest that Grimble’s old life was unhappy; instead, it contrasts the comfort of home with the fresh enjoyment of going out.
