Lyrics meaning

The speaker imagines being a boy for one day to experience the freedom and social approval she believes boys receive. She contrasts this with a relationship in which a man ignores her feelings and takes her for granted. At first, she hopes that understanding how it feels to love a girl would make him more considerate. By the end, her tone has hardened: she will not simply forgive him or wait for him to return.

โ€œTaken for grantedโ€ means failing to value someone or assuming they will always be there. Turning off the phone and saying it is broken suggests deliberately avoiding a partner while making an excuse. The imagined freedom to โ€œmake the rulesโ€ points to unequal expectations: the speaker believes a boy could put himself first without being challenged, while a girl is expected to remain faithful and wait.

The song uses โ€œboyโ€ in two related ways: it refers to the imagined male perspective, but it also suggests immaturity in the partnerโ€™s behavior. The speakerโ€™s claim that she would understand better if she were a boy is intentionally paradoxical; she seems to mean that experiencing the privileges and choices he has would reveal the unfairness. Still, the lyrics do not establish that all boys or men behave this way. The anger is directed at one relationship and may express both hurt and a wish to be heard.
