No Me Queda Más

The speaker is facing the end of a love that was not returned, or is now denied by the other person. At first, the mood is one of defeat and deep sadness: she feels there is nothing left to do but accept the separation and wish the other person happiness. As the song develops, however, she becomes more certain about her own feelings. Even if the relationship meant something different to the other person, she regards her love as real and precious.

The “abyss” suggests being overwhelmed by sadness, while “a hope in the depths of my soul” describes a private wish that the beloved would stay. The image of hope “feeding” the heart means that this expectation kept her emotionally alive. To “see” someone “only as a friend” marks a painful change in their relationship. The song also contrasts the other person’s denial with the speaker’s memory: what they say never happened remains, for her, the sweetest memory of her life.

The lyrics do not tell us exactly what happened between the two people, or why the other person denies the love. The speaker even admits she may have been mistaken about the relationship, but she does not conclude that her feelings were false. Her acceptance is therefore mixed: she lets go of the hope of being together while holding on to the meaning the experience had for her.
