Lyrics meaning

The speaker feels that love is both wonderfully near and painfully out of reach. When the beloved is in their arms or they kiss, the speaker experiences โ€œparadiseโ€; when the beloved disappears, that happiness quickly turns to longing. The song moves between brief closeness and repeated absence, ending with the speaker still waiting and hoping.

โ€œParadiseโ€ is an image for perfect happiness, especially the feeling of being together. The beloved โ€œslip[s] away like a child at play,โ€ suggesting a sudden, perhaps carefree departure rather than a deliberate rejection. Later, the beloved is compared to โ€œa floating starโ€: visible and beautiful, but distant and impossible to hold. โ€œA step awayโ€ implies that happiness seems almost within reach.

The lyrics show the speakerโ€™s intense desire and confidence that the relationship can become secure: they promise to care for the beloved and say the beloved belongs in their arms. But that certainty sits beside repeated evidence of separation. We cannot tell whether the beloved is actually leaving, whether the speaker fears losing them, or whether these are moments of ordinary distance made emotionally powerful. The repeated contrast leaves the ending hopeful, but unresolved.
