Squares

The lyrics portray someone who feels cut off from other people and from their own emotions. Demons, people, and feelings all seem to try to make contact, but the speaker does not respond: they lie on the ground or avoid others. The repeated daydream offers a softer, dreamlike escape, though it does not clearly solve the loneliness.

“Miles and miles of squares” may suggest a repetitive, orderly landscape, such as rows of buildings or blocks. Against that image, “Where’s the feeling there?” expresses a sense that this environment is empty or lifeless. The flowers provide a contrasting image: falling asleep among them evokes rest, nature, and a retreat from ordinary pressures. “Gave the runaround” means avoiding or evading someone, so the speaker seems to resist human connection as well as struggle to reach feelings.

The song leaves the cause of this distance unclear. The “demons” could be inner troubles, fears, or simply unsettling figures in a dream; the lyrics do not settle on one meaning. Likewise, the speaker’s withdrawal may feel passive and exhausted, while giving people the runaround sounds more deliberate. The repetition makes the daydream seem comforting, but also hints that the speaker may be stuck returning to the same escape.
