Purple Haze

The speaker describes a strange, powerful experience that makes ordinary reality feel changed. He seems excited and overwhelmed, but also confused and distressed. At first he wonders whether he is happy or miserable; later, his repeated calls for help suggest that the experience has become difficult to control.

“Purple haze” is an image for a clouded, unreal state: it affects his brain and eyes, and makes it hard to tell day from night. The line about not knowing whether he is “coming up or down” expresses uncertainty about his state or direction. “Kiss the sky” may suggest feeling lifted or carried away, though it can also sound like a playful, exaggerated expression of excitement.

The speaker connects this feeling to “that girl,” saying she has put a spell on him and makes his mind “blow.” This could mean intense romantic attraction, but the strange colors, altered sense of time, and pleas for help also allow a broader reading: he may be describing some kind of disorienting or altered experience. The lyrics do not explain exactly what causes it, so the mix of pleasure, confusion, and pain remains open to interpretation.
