Hangin' Tree

The lyrics create a strange, dreamlike scene around a hanging tree. The repeated image of two figures swaying together makes the scene feel calm on the surface, especially with the summer breeze and sun. Yet the tree suggests death or danger, so the peaceful setting is unsettling. The speaker’s questions about flying away and seeing what is beneath a thumb add a sense of uncertainty and tension.

The hanging tree may represent a place where love, death, or suffering meet. The idea that the two figures are “one” can suggest deep closeness, but beside the tree it may also hint that they are bound together in a troubling way. “I bleed my own” is unclear: it could mean the speaker suffers personally, or causes pain to someone close. The thumb may suggest control, as if one person is holding another down or keeping them hidden.

Because the lyrics give few details and repeat the same images, there is no single certain story. The scene might be imagined, symbolic, or deliberately contradictory: sunlight and togetherness appear alongside a hanging tree and blood. Rather than explaining what happened, the song seems to hold the listener in that uneasy contrast. The repeated swaying can feel like a gentle motion, but also like something caught and unable to escape.
