Going Back to My Roots

The speaker decides to return to the place of their birth, hoping the journey will help them feel grounded and rediscover who they are. At first, this sounds like a physical trip home, but the repeated idea of “going back” also suggests an inward search. The mood is purposeful and hopeful: the speaker wants to feel seen, be themselves, and find a simpler sense of belonging.

“Zipping up my boots” suggests getting ready to leave, while “homeward bound” means traveling toward home. The speaker clarifies that their roots are not only in the land: they are also “in the man,” meaning in a person’s identity and inner life. “Back down to Earth” can mean returning to what is real and basic. The contrast with riches emphasizes that material success does not necessarily bring happiness.

The lyrics leave open what “home” means. It may be the speaker’s birthplace, a community where they feel loved, or a more honest connection with themselves. The lines listing colors and saying “It’s not” those colors may reject racial labels or divisions, but the song does not explain this directly. The repeated phrase “just a state of mind” suggests happiness depends partly on how one understands life, without claiming that simply changing one’s thoughts solves every problem.
