Puppet On A String

The speaker describes being completely affected by someone they love. A look or a touch makes them feel unable to resist, and they say they will do whatever the other person wants. The feeling is joyful devotion, but there is also vulnerability: the speaker gives a great deal of power to the person they love.

“Puppet on a string” is a metaphor for someone whose actions seem controlled by another person, like a puppet moved by strings. “Your wish is my command” is an expression meaning “I will do what you ask.” The image of the heart that should be handled “with love and care” suggests that the speaker’s feelings are precious and can be hurt.

The lyrics can be heard as a romantic expression of surrender: the speaker is so in love that they willingly follow the other person. But the repeated claim that the beloved can do “most anything” also hints at an unequal relationship, where one person has more control. The request to “be fair” and “be kind” complicates the devotion. The speaker may trust their beloved, yet knows that such trust could leave them open to being treated carelessly.
