Lyrics
There's a light that swing on the bayou
Twilight star burn in the sky
When she walk the evening winds whisper
When she stop everybody cry
They all knew her as the queen of the parish
Back in the days when sugarcane was king
I still smell her perfume in the morning
When daylight dawns and the whippoorwill sings
When sugarcane was king
I was headstrong and handsome
When sugarcane was king
She was by my side
Those were the days of joy to remember
When sugarcane was king
And she was my bride
You know her daddy was a very rich man
Her family name was Societe News
I was a boy from the wrong side of town
But I stood tall and my heart was true
There was nothing gonna keep us apart
We made a vow together
She promised me I'd always be the one
To hold her heart forever
When sugarcane was king
I was headstrong and handsome
When sugarcane was king
She was by my side
Those were the days of joy to remember
When sugarcane was king
And she was my bride
Now she comes to me when the world is quiet
When candles burn low deep in the night
I can hear her voice in the cool night breeze
She comes to me in my dreams
When sugarcane was king
I was headstrong and handsome
When sugarcane was king
She was by my side
Those were the days of joy to remember
When sugarcane was king
And she was my bride
When sugarcane was king
I was headstrong and handsome
When sugarcane was king
She was by my side
Those were the days of joy to remember
When sugarcane was king
And she was my bride
