Lyrics meaning
The lyrics create a horror scene in which a helpless person is imprisoned and subjected to violent treatment. The emotion moves from menace, through pain and desperate cries for help, toward a bleak ending in which the victim is silenced and reduced to a grim symbol. The repeated phrase โthe skull beneath the skinโ keeps attention on what lies underneath the personโs visible surface.
Several images make the suffering feel both physical and symbolic. A โpilloryโ is a device used to restrain someone, so being โlocked in a pilloryโ suggests public punishment as well as captivity. Metal covering the ears, eyes, and mouth represents the removal of the victimโs ability to sense, see, or speak. The image of a body folded into a โholy crossโ turns a religious symbol into part of the violence; the lyric then says that religion has been lost, suggesting a contrast between sacred ideals and cruelty.
The song may be describing a literal nightmare, but its exaggerated, theatrical images also invite a broader reading about persecution, fear, or the abuse of power. The references to witches, black magic, and the Devil build a supernatural atmosphere, yet they do not explain who is responsible or why. The repeated refrain could point simply to mortalityโthe skeleton beneath every living bodyโor to the horror of seeing a person stripped of identity and treated as an object.
