The Beat Goes On

The lyrics present life as a mixture of change and continuity. Fashion, shopping, entertainment, and technology move on, but familiar human experiences remain: people fall in love, remember the past, play sports, and go to war. The repeated refrain gives the song a steady, almost cheerful pulse, while some of its examples point to serious or unequal realities.

The “beat” suggests both music and the ongoing rhythm of everyday life. Saying that history “has turned the page” means that one period has passed and a new one has begun; the references to the Charleston and miniskirts make changing fashions easy to see. In contrast, grandmothers reminiscing and boys seeking kisses show generations repeating recognizable patterns. The drumbeat “pounding” in the brain can imply that this steady rhythm is hard to ignore.

The song’s tone is playful, but its observations are not entirely light. War continues alongside ordinary leisure, and a person asking for a dime hints at poverty amid modern conveniences. These contrasts may suggest that progress changes how people live without solving every problem. The refrain could sound reassuring, as if life keeps moving, or slightly resigned, as if some troubles simply persist. The lyrics leave room for both readings.
