Let's Twist Again

The song is a cheerful invitation to dance. The singer urges everyone to join in, then looks back fondly on dancing in earlier summers and years. The repeated call to “twist again” blends excitement about the present with nostalgia for a happy shared experience.

The twist is both a dance and the center of the song’s playful images: dancers go “round and round and up and down,” suggesting energetic movement rather than a literal journey. “Things were really hummin’” is an informal way to say that life or the party felt lively and exciting. The flying-object joke—first guessing a bird, then a plane, then a “twister”—turns the dance’s name into a comic image of something spinning through the air.

The lyrics are mainly lighthearted, not a detailed story. The request for the loved one to “make me know” they love the singer adds a hint of romance, but it does not change the song’s party mood. The memories could refer to a particular past gathering or simply to the pleasure of repeating a favorite dance; the lyrics leave that open. Overall, the singer seems eager to bring back a joyful feeling by dancing together again.
