Lyrics

Lyrics meaning

The speaker feels a frightening change taking place inside them. At first, they are afraid of what may happen at night and try to keep a savage force under control. As the song develops, that force seems to grow stronger, and the speaker becomes less sure of who they are. The repeated welcome sounds less like a greeting than a grim acceptance of this frightening state.

The dragon is an image for a powerful, dangerous part of the speaker: its โ€œseedโ€ is already inside them, and its breath is something they struggle to hold back. The mirror suggests confronting an identity they may not want to see. Saying the town โ€œmust burnโ€ could express destruction spilling outward if control is lost, rather than describing a literal plan.

The lyrics leave open whether the change is supernatural, a dream, or a metaphor for rage or another inner struggle. The speaker says they cannot control the force, yet also says, โ€œI donโ€™t let it out,โ€ showing both fear and resistance. The final image of spreading wings and flying away could suggest escape, surrender to the dragon, or a transformed kind of freedom; the song does not settle which reading is right.
