Lyrics meaning
The song presents a family remembering a grandmother at her funeral. The speaker’s grief is complicated: childhood memories show her as cruel and frightening, yet the family still mourns her. The mood moves between sadness, anger, dark humor, and a final, uneasy farewell. The speaker does not smooth over the harm she caused, even while wishing her well in the next life.
Several images make that mixed portrait vivid. The grandmother forcing dumplings on the child and striking him with a stick turns ordinary family care into something threatening. The repeated fairy-tale contrasts—a “good fairy” who is really a witch, and a “big bad wolf” who is only a small dog—suggest that appearances and labels can be misleading. Her room, with lace doilies, a chamber pot, and a picture of Hitler, also links domestic details with a painful political memory. The lyrics say she forgave Hitler because he had awarded her the “Mother’s Cross,” an honor for motherhood.
The song’s humor is deliberately sharp, especially in the closing advice not to take that medal to God. Her later confusion and changed behavior may suggest illness or aging, but the lyrics do not name a cause. Nor do they settle how the family feels about her: affection, resentment, pity, and grief coexist. The farewell sounds caring, but it does not erase what the speaker remembers.
