Lyrics meaning
The lyrics tell the story of Arthur, a grown man who works in a family shop and returns each day to live with his mother. He briefly leaves home to marry Sally, but married life does not suit him, and he goes back. The movement from routine, to escape, and then back again gives the song a comic edge, while also suggesting that Arthurโs independence is fragile.
Several repeated details make his world feel small and circular. He cycles past the same landmarks on his way home, and later the song repeats that route, showing how little changes. โRound and roundโ describes both gossip about his departure and the restless confusion in his head. His comics and Batman suggest a taste for youthful fantasy, while โpocket moneyโ and being โwell fedโ make his return to his mother sound like a return to childhood dependence.
The song can be read as gently mocking Arthurโs inability to manage adult life, especially when he leaves Sally because she is a poor cook. But the repetition also allows a more sympathetic reading: he seems to want a different life, yet struggles to sustain it. The lyrics do not explain whether he returns from love, comfort, or fear, so his choice remains both comic and a little sad.
