Lyrics meaning
The speaker repeatedly sees a woman on her way to catch an early train, just as he is returning home. Their opposite schedules make the encounter feel brief and one-sided: he waits to see her, while she seems to be starting an ordinary day. His admiration gradually turns into sadness and envy. He imagines a settled life for her and feels that it is beyond his reach.
Several images create this contrast. The light of morning โfrightensโ him, suggesting discomfort with the daytime world rather than literal fear. The smell of coffee, neatly groomed children, and a husband form a picture of family routineโbut this is what the speaker imagines from seeing her, not what he knows about her. Calling himself โborn guiltyโ expresses shame about his desires and his sense of being an outsider; it need not mean that he has committed a specific crime.
The lyrics leave the speakerโs circumstances partly unclear. His night-worn appearance and late return suggest a life organized around nights, but they do not explain exactly what he does or why he feels excluded. His image of the womanโs happy home may be accurate, or it may be a fantasy built from a passing glimpse. The songโs sadness comes partly from that uncertainty: he longs not only for her, but for a life he believes he cannot have.
