Mr. Bojangles

The lyrics describe a meeting between the speaker, who is “down and out,” and an older man called Bojangles in a jail cell. Bojangles tells parts of his life story and dances, briefly filling the confined space with energy and delight. The mood moves between admiration for his performance and sadness about his losses, drinking, and time behind bars.

His worn clothes and silver hair suggest a hard life, while his light jumps and clicking heels show the skill and joy he can still express. The dog’s death is especially painful: Bojangles has grieved for years, and the simple image of the two traveling together hints at a close companionship. Dancing “for drinks and tips” means he earns small amounts by performing, so his talent is also a way to get by.

The song presents Bojangles as both a captivating entertainer and a lonely, troubled person. His laughter and dancing may help him face hardship, but they do not erase his grief or drinking. The repeated request for him to dance can sound like praise, yet it may also suggest that others mainly see him as a performer, rather than noticing the person behind the show.
