On My Own

The speaker is grieving the end of a close relationship. At first, the lyrics focus on broken promises, shock, and loneliness: the speaker never expected to be alone and wonders why the relationship ended. Gradually, the feeling shifts. Although the speaker still wishes things could be different, they begin to talk about finding their place, becoming strong, and trusting themselves again.

Several images express how painful the breakup feels. Saying the loss “cut like a knife” compares emotional pain to a sharp physical wound. “You walked out and there went my life” suggests that the speaker feels the relationship was central to their whole world, rather than literally meaning life has ended. The repeated phrase “on my own” means being alone, but it also comes to suggest facing life independently. The line about talking of divorce without being married adds a touch of irony: the relationship has reached a serious ending despite never having formal marriage vows.

The ending is hopeful, but not simply cheerful. The speaker’s faith in love has been shaken, and they still sound hurt and uncertain. Their confidence in themselves seems to be growing rather than fully restored. “On my own” can therefore carry two meanings at once: painful isolation and the beginning of self-reliance.
