Lyrics

It was a time of celebration. The defeat of Scar had been long ago And the Pride Lands were happily at peace. Carried on the crest of The wind was a message from Mufasa that had gathered all the animals Around Pride Rock like a father's gentle arm. The royal family King Simba and Queen Nala, the majordomo Zazu, the wise one Rafiki And the family friends Pumbaa and Timon stood high on the summit When Rafiki walked to the edge, he was carrying Simba and Nala's Firstborn cub. He lifted the small bundle to The heavens, then he extended it to the jubilant Animals below. A new circle of life had begun Timon nudged Pumbaa affectionately "Pumbaa, look at that little guy. A chip off the old block And you gotta know who's gonna raise him. I'm telling you, buddy It's gonna be like old times. You, me, and the little guy." "It is a girl." "Girl!" The two friends fainted dead away Baby Kiara's early years passed rapidly, and soon she was old enough To be on her own. One morning she burst out of the lions' cave to Go exploring. Simba was fast on her heels with some fatherly advice "Kiara, are you listening? Accidents can happen You could easily get hurt or stepped on." "Or stepped on, or even get lost." "And stay away from the Outlands." Zazu flew overhead "Nothing there but a bunch of backstabbing, murderous outsiders." "Zazu's right. You can't turn your back on them." "Really? How come?" "Never mind. Just run along now." As Nala scampered off into a field of tall grass Simba summoned Pumbaa and Timon to his side "I want you to keep a close watch on Kiara. You know she's bound to run off." "Don't worry, Simba. We're on her like stink on a warthog." "Hey!" "It's a hard truth, Pumbaa. Live with it." "Guys, I'm counting on you. Danger Could be lurking behind every rock." Kiara continued through the grass and down over some rocks Unaware that she was being shadowed by her two friends. By and By she came to a swampy river that looked difficult to cross Climbing over a fallen log, she lost her balance. But it wasn't The murky water that she made contact with. It was another lion cub "Who are you, Pridelander?" This new young lion stepped forward, and Kiara took a step back The stranger took another step forward, and Kiara took another Step back. Then he turned to his right, so she turned to her left "What are you doing?" "My father says to never turn your back on an outsider." "You always do what Daddy says?" "No!" "Betcha do. Bet you're Daddy's little girl." The conceited young cub, whose name was Kovu, leaped to another log "An outsider doesn't need anybody. I take care of myself." "Really? Cool!" Kiara leaped after him. She wanted to learn more about this cat But just then, one of the fallen logs moved. It wasn't a log at All. It was a crocodile, and its huge mouth was opening for Kiara "Run!" The cubs scrambled onto some rocks, but the crocodile Came after them. The lions looked wildly around "This way!" There was a small island in the middle of the river. Kovu and Kiara took a giant leap across the water and landed safely on it "That was a close one." "Yeah." But then the whole island began to move, and it turned out to Be a tangled knot of sleeping crocodiles. Suddenly the cubs Were being lifted into the air on the back of a huge tail Kovu dived into the water and dog-paddled as fast as he could But one crocodile was right on his tail. It was about to take A bite when Kiara jumped on its head, closing its mouth shut Kovu swam to shore, and Kiara jumped across. The cubs stood On the riverbank, panting, looking down at the crocodiles When Kiara finally caught her breath, she felt victorious "I did it. I did it!" "Ha!" "Oh, man, did you see the size of those teeth? They were going ' Rawr, rawr, rawr, rawr, rawr.' He just totally ate me up right There, and I jumped on his head, and I popped him so good We make such a good team. And you, you were really brave." Kiara strutted away, ready to take on the World. Now it was Kovu who followed Kiara "Yeah, you were pretty brave, too. My name's Kovu." "I'm Kiara." At that moment the young lions felt as if there weren't anyone else In the world. Little did they know that when Kiara said her name Another lioness, huddled in the tall grass, had pricked up her ears And hunched down even lower. Kiara playfully poked Kovu and bounded Away, ready to be chased. But Kovu sat motionless, his face a blank As you go through life you'll see There is so much that we don't understand And the only thing we know Is things don't always go the way we planned But you'll see every day that we'll never turn away When it seems all your dreams come undone We will stand by your side Filled with hope and filled with pride We are more than we are, we are one Family, family, we are one Family, family, we are one If there's so much I must be Can I still just be me, the way I am? Can I trust in my own heart Or am I just one part of some big plan? Even those who are gone Are with us as we go on Your journey has only begun Tears of pain, tears of joy One thing nothing can destroy Is our pride deep inside, we are one Family, family, we are one Family, family, we are one We are one, you and I We are like the earth and sky One family under the sun All the wisdom to lead All the courage that you need You will find when you come Family, family, Kiara was stalking the herd of antelope Suddenly, she stepped on a twig. The antelope lifted their Heads and scattered. Now Kiara had to start all over again The herd were heading for the other side of the elephant graveyard So she made that her direction too. But in her earnestness She failed to see Nuka and Vitani hiding out in the graveyard That's it! Oh, come on! Kiara has started Her hunt. We have to move quickly Roasty, toasty princess! Roasty, toasty princess! Hey, is it hot in here or is that just me? Fire! No! The two lions took off after Kiara with burning branches in Their mouths. In a matter of minutes, they had set fire to All the dry grass around them. The frightened antelope were Stampeding towards Kiara. She could see the orange flames and The oncoming herd. Simba, from his perch on Pride Rock Witnessed the thick black smoke. He took off down the mountainside No! No! Kiara! Soon, fire was everywhere. Kiara's only escape was to jump down Into the canyon. Luckily, her feet met with a ledge. Now where Was she going to go? Then, through the haze, she saw the shadow Of another lion coming toward her. He looked familiar, but he Acted strangely, almost as if he were asleep. When he reached her He lifted her up and draped her over his shoulders and they continued Down the embankment. At the river, he stopped and gently laid her Down in it. Then he got in the water beside her and began swimming Pulling her along. After some distance, they stopped to rest Where am I? You're safe in the Pride Lands The Pride Lands? No! Why'd you bring Me here? Who do you think you are? I think I'm the one that just saved your life Look, I had everything under control Not from where I'm standing Then move downwind Kiara turned her back on the lion. He came 'round and stood in front Of her. She tried to sidestep him. He blocked her way. She kicked Water at him. He kicked it back. This dance had happened before What are you doing? Kovu? But before the lion could respond, Simba charged in Kiara! Father, how could you break your promise? It's a good thing I did. I almost lost You. No more hunts for you, not ever But I was doing just fine. Even before Kovu... Kovu? Suddenly, Rafiki appeared up on the ledge Hey! You! How dare you save the king's daughter! You saved her? Why? I humbly ask to join your pride No! You were banished with the other outsiders I have left the outsiders. I am a rogue. Judge me now for Who I am. Or am I to be blamed for a crime I didn't commit? My father's law will prevail. For now I reserve judgment. We'll see who you really are The small group started home with Simba in the lead and Kovu following Behind the others. When they reached Pride Rock, it was late and Many of the lionesses were going inside the cave to sleep. Simba Paced back and forth in front of the entrance and when Kovu tried To go in, Simba blocked his way and growled. Kovu curled up outside Hey, uh, thanks for saving me today What kind of hunter are you anyway, princess? You almost got yourself killed out there What? You wouldn't last three days on your own Oh, and I suppose you could teach me? Oh, yeah Kiara! Coming! All right, impress me. We start at dawn I look forward to it Zira and Nuka watched the scene from a far-off hill Oh, did you see that? He let her go! If that were me... Hush! The fire rescue worked perfectly and Simba fell For it. Now, the closer Kovu gets to the daughter, the Closer he gets to Simba. And once he has Simba alone... You could hear me, huh? Only a lot. You're still breathing too hard. Relax Feel the earth under your paws so it doesn't shift And make noise. Shh. Watch the master and learn Kovu prepared to demonstrate, first settling his paws onto firm Ground, then crouching low, and finally sprinting Over a hill. Kiara ran to catch up. She found Kovu face-to-face with a very nervous mer-cat Don't eat me, please! I never really met your tyrant I mean, Scar. Scar. Heck of a guy. A little moody, but... Timon? What are you doing here? Kiara! Thank goodness! Hey, for once we're not following you This just happens to be the best smorgasbord in the Pride Lands Bugs everywhere! But you don't call for a reservation and . Yeesh! Get out of here, you scavengers! Go on! Shoo! Shoo! Timon tried scaring away the ravenous birds, but they only resettled Elsewhere. So Pumbaa took a shot at them and charged right at them But the birds flew up only a few feet, letting Pumbaa Run underneath them. Then they settled right back down Timon, I'm getting tired. I gotta lose some pounds Hey, wait! I have an idea. What if he helps? What? Like this The birds scattered like confetti. Timon jumped on Pumbaa's back and together they galloped around the Field. Kiara took up the chase as well, and so did Kovu Why are we doing this? What's the point of this training? Training? This is just for fun! Fun? You gotta get out more often. Fun! Yee-haw! Finally Kovu caught on to the pursuit of pleasure, and the foursome Charged after the birds like cowboys after stampeding cattle Yee-haw! Until the birds sought refuge from the Marauders behind a crash of rhinoceros Uh-oh Now it was the rhinos who gave chase as the quartet Tried to avoid the stabbing horns and thundering hooves They all ducked into the crevice of a large boulder Where they safely watched the stampeding rhinos pass by What a blast! You're okay, kid. You're okay Timon gave Kovu a friendly punch, then tried to wriggle his Way out of the cave. Pumbaa was trying to squeeze out too Excuse me. Pardon me. Pardon me. That's it. That's it. That's it! With all the wiggling and pushing that it took to get Pumbaa and Timon Out of the nook, Kiara got pressed up against Kovu until they could Just about touch noses. For a moment, the two cubs felt awkward and Embarrassed. Then something clicked, and they held that position Hey, are you two coming or what? Kovu and Kiara eased their way out of the cave and blindly Followed Pumbaa and Timon. For the rest of the day and Well into night, their attention was only on each other They lounged in the grass, gazing up at the stars Look, there's one that looks like a baby rabbit. See the fluffy tail? Yeah. Hey, there's one that looks like two lions killing Each other for a scrap of meat. I've never done this before Really? My father and I used to do this all the time He says all the great kings of the past are up there Do you think Scar's up there? He wasn't My father, but he was still part of me My father said there was a darkness in Scar that he couldn't escape Maybe there's a darkness in me, too A sense of fear gripped Kovu's heart. He was treading on dangerous Ground. But Kiara placed a comforting paw on his shoulder and he Relaxed a little bit. Meanwhile, from a distance, Simba was watching The two of them, confusion growing in his own heart. He searched The sky for Mufasa, unaware that his mate Nala was behind him Father, I am lost. Kovu is one of them Scar's heir. How can I accept him? Simba? I was seeking counsel from the great kings Did they help? Silent as stars. My father would never... Oh, my Simba. You want so much to walk the Path expected of you. Perhaps Kovu does not What? How do you know? I can see them down there just as easily As you can. Get to know him and see As Simba and Nala strolled back to the pride Kovu anxiously moved away from Kiara What's wrong? Nothing Kovu? It's just that my whole life I've been Trained to... Nothing. I gotta go Kovu, wait For a moment, Kovu paused. But then he changed his mind He wanted to escape this uneasy feeling. But before He got the chance, Rafiki mysteriously appeared again And where are you going? Nowhere Ha! That's what you think Who was that? A friend of the family Come on, you follow old Rafiki. He knows The way. There's a place where the crazy moon Makes the monkeys sing and the baboons swoon And the sultry scent of the lotus bloom Will carry you away While the hippos swing from the jungle vines And the rhino rumba in a conga line While the pink flamingos are intertwined As the stars come out to play In Upendi Where the passion fruit grows sweet And it's so divine that you lose your mind As it sweeps you off your feet In Upendi Without a worry or a care It just takes two to make it through Your heart will lead you there In Upendi In Upendi You better watch your step 'cause the path is steep You better hold your breath 'cause the water's deep It's a long way down over Lover's Leap But falling's half the fun In Upendi Where the passion fruit grows sweet And it's so divine that you lose your mind As it sweeps you off your feet In Upendi Without a worry or a care It just takes two to make it through Your heart will take you there You can beat the bush like there's no tomorrow From Tanganyika to Kilimanjaro But you'll find Upendi wherever you are Underneath the sun In Upendi Where the passion fruit grows sweet And it's so divine that you lose your mind As it sweeps you off your feet In Upendi Without a worry or a care It just takes two to make it through Your heart will take you there In Upendi In Upendi In Upendi In Upendi In Upendi In Upendi In Upendi In No! I didn't have anything to do with this! Attack! The outsiders rushed Simba, ready to rip him apart. Nuka got to him First, but Simba batted him away. Then the others piled on top And Simba was outnumbered. It was a writhing heap of teeth and claws Kovu tried to peel the lions off one by one, but when he grabbed Hold of Vitani, he couldn't hurt his sister. She, on the other hand Wasted no time getting rid of him. Kovu went down instantly His head hitting a sharp rock, and Vitani dived back into the pack Yes! We've got him! Vitani lunged straight for Simba But he managed to roll away from her Remember your training! As a unit! Simba got up and began running down the ravine. The outlanders Madly chased him. When he came to a wall of burnt timber, he Scrambled up the loose logs. Below, the lions were eagerly waiting For him to fall, their tails twitching. Each time he shifted his Weight a little, one of the tree limbs would shake loose and Tumble down. Suddenly, Kovu was above him, hanging over the ravine Simba! Get him, Kovu! Get him! Do it! Now! I'll do it for you, Mother! Nuka tried bouncing on the logs beneath Simba to make him fall Mother, are you watching? I'm doing It for you, and I'm doing it for me! Then Nuka scaled the logs, getting so close To Simba that he could grab his hind leg This is my moment of glory! But then came the fatal move. The main piece of wood Holding Nuka split in two. Nuka fell backward Sending an avalanche of logs crashing on top of him No! As the lions watched one of their brethren fall, Simba made a leap For the other side of the ravine and hung on with his claws. Then he Pulled himself up and over the ledge to safety. At the same time Kovu was racing down the ravine to save his brother. He frantically Dug through the jumble of wood. When he got to Nuka, Zira shoved him aside and clawed the rest Of the way through. Her son was barely alive Nuka, I'm sorry Mother, I tried Shh. No, no, no He asked for trouble the moment he came Deception, outrage, disgrace, shame He brought us pain as the scars remain Deception, outrage, disgrace, shame He asked for trouble the moment he came Born in grief, raised in hate Helpless to defy his fate Let him run, let him live But do not forget what we cannot forgive And he is not one of us He has never been one of us He is not part of us Not our kind Someone once lied to us Now we're not so blind For we knew he would do what he's done And we know that he'll never be one of us He is not one of us Deception, disgrace Deception, disgrace Deception Kovu didn't argue. It was clear he wasn't wanted. As he ran from The Pride Lands, Kiara shook with sobs. But Simba stood his ground Rafiki, feeling the loss, watched the tragedy from his tree Father, please reconsider You will not go anywhere without an escort from now on No, that's not... He used you to get to me No! He loves me. For me Because you are my daughter. You will not leave Pride Rock You will stay where I can keep an eye on you. Away from him You don't know him I know he's following in Scar's pawprints And I must follow in my father's You will never be Mufasa! Kiara ran into the cave and threw herself down. She couldn't bear the Thought of never seeing Kovu again. She had to be with him. Without A word to anyone, she hurried back outside and ran away, determined To find him. As she searched the plains, her logical thoughts gave Way to the emotions of her heart. Little did she know that Kovu was Experiencing the same feelings from his hiding place on the savannah In a perfect world One we've never known We would never need To face the world alone They can have the world We'll create our own I may not be brave or strong or smart But somewhere in my secret heart I know love will find a way Anywhere I go, I'm home If you are there beside me Like dark turning into day Somehow we'll come through Now that I've found you Love will find a way I was so afraid Now I realize Love is never wrong And so it never dies There's a perfect world Shining in your eyes And if only they could feel it too The happiness I feel with you They'd know love will find a way Anywhere we go, we're home If we are there together Like dark turning into day Somehow we'll come through Now that I've found you Love will find a way I know love will find a way Finally, she saw him, on the other side of the savannah Let's get out of here. We'll run away Together and start a pride all our own Kovu, we have to go back You're kidding. But we're finally together Our place is with our pride. If we Run away, they'll be divided forever At last it made sense to Kovu. He stared into Kiara's eyes Gaining the strength he needed from her. Then they turned and Began their journey home, unaware of the storm that was brewing Zazu got to Pride Rock as it started raining. The royal Family was clustered around Simba, doctoring his wounds Sire, the outsiders are on the attack, heading this way! It's war! Zazu, find Kiara. We'll assemble the lionesses. Move now! Suddenly, as the storm raged, everyone was converging on Antelope Gorge for the final showdown. Simba and his army Was on one side of the battlefield, Zira and her warriors On the other. Overhead, vultures were already circling It's over, Simba. I have dreamed of nothing else for years Last chance, Zira. Go home I am home. Attack! Go for the eyes! Break his jaw! Hit him low! Get them! Do what you must! Just as the fight broke out, Kovu and Kiara arrived, their Eyes wide, taking in the destruction. Were they too late? The battle was escalating, with everyone getting involved. But They couldn't find their parents. Pumbaa echoed their thoughts What do we do? What do we do? There's only one thing we can do, Pumbaa. When the Going gets tough, the tough get going. That's our motto I thought our motto was "Hakuna matata." Pumbaa, stop living in the past. We need a new motto. Yee-haw! Suddenly, the two buddies were just inches From the hungry mouth of an outsider Like I said, let's get going! Meanwhile, enemies sought out their enemies Where's your pretty daughter, Nala? Vitani! Nala and Vitani lunged at each other. Despite their difference In age, they were equally matched. Those who were fighting Simba, however, were gaining the advantage. Zira's army Had already weakened him. Zira moved in for the kill Simba, you're mine But before she could spring at him, something dropped in her path It was Kovu and Kiara. This time they got between Simba and Zira Kiara? Kovu? Move Stand aside But no one made a move Daddy, this has to stop Zira tried to intimidate her son You're even weaker than I thought. Get out of the way You'll never hurt Kiara or Simba Not while I'm here. Stay out of this Kiara calmly approached her father A wise king once told me, "We are one." I didn't understand him then. Now I do But they... Them? Us? Look at them. They are us. What differences do you see? Simba looked around him and saw dozens of soggy, beat-up lions There was no telling whose side who was on, only that his pride Would follow him to its death. He looked back at his daughter's Innocent young face. He was ready to Lay down his weapons. But was Zira? Vitani, now! No, Mother. Kiara's right. Enough Then Vitani walked over to Kovu and Stood next to him. Zira was shocked If you will not fight, then you will die as well But Vitani met her mother's hateful stare. And slowly Other outsiders took the side of Kovu and Vitani What? Where are you going? Get back here! Let it go, Zira. It's time to put the past behind us I'll never let it go. This is for you, Scar In an act of desperation, Zira leaped at Simba. But Kiara slammed Into her instead, and the two of them went plunging over the river Kiara! Head over heels, they bounced off the rocky walls in a tangle of fur Kiara! Up on the ledge, all the lions gathered To watch. Simba looked for a way down Kiara! But the walls were too steep. And then Zira got caught in a Mudslide. It swept her away. Kiara dug her claws into the rock Hold on, Kiara! Then Nala heard a strange sound in the distance. It was like Thunder, only deeper, as if it were coming from the ground She turned and saw the river raging through the gorge "Simba! Simba! The river!" Simba was leaping his way down the gorge from ledge to ledge Trying to get to his daughter. By this time, Kiara had found a Platform of earth, and she was hanging over it, trying to reach Zira "Zira, give me your paw!" Lugs churned through the river beneath them. Zira looked up into Kiara's face. She couldn't believe the young lioness was willing to Help her. But gravity was tugging at her body, and her claws were Starting to slip. If she could just get her footing... but then... "AAAAAAHHHHH!" Zira fell backward into the river. The lugs caught Her in their swift grasp, and she was whisked away At that moment, Simba made it down to Kiara. Her face was tortured with grief "Kiara." "Daddy. I tried." Simba offered her his paw, and they started back up The cliff, where everyone was anxiously waiting "Kiara. Oh, Simba." "Wow, that was really brave! Yee-haw!" "Kovu." "Oh, Kiara." The young lions embraced "Kovu, I was wrong. You belong here. Let's go home. All of us." Simba and all the lions, including the outsiders, formed a Circle on Pride Rock. When Simba gave his nod, Rafiki shook His staff over Kovu and Kiara. Everyone looked at them with joy "I love moments like this!" "Yeah, love, not like! Love!" Then Simba and Nala led the newly joined couple around the Circle of animals, who bowed deeply before them. Simba returned To the summit and puffed out his chest. Kovu followed suit And then Nala and Kiara. When it was quiet again, the animals Of the Pride Lands sent up a cheer. This caused the clouds to Part, and rays of warm sunshine delivered a message to Simba "Well done, my son. We are one."
