Lyrics meaning

The lyrics describe a nighttime street scene where a narrator notices a woman seeking customers and a man who seems ready to exploit her. At first, the narrator judges both people harshly and feels wary of the man. Later, however, the attention shifts to the womanโ€™s cold and exposed situation, and the narrator wonders about her story. The repeated line about things changing after sunset suggests that the area takes on a different, more troubling character at night.

Several details build this picture without explaining everything. The manโ€™s ordinary Ford Mondeo makes him seem โ€œinconspicuousโ€โ€”easy to overlookโ€”while his driving ban and other offences hint at a dangerous past. โ€œGive him half a chanceโ€ means that even a small opportunity may be enough for him to rob someone. The womanโ€™s โ€œred lightโ€ evokes prostitution, and her scant clothing under the night sky emphasizes her vulnerability.

The lyrics leave important questions open: what led the woman to the street, and what exactly is the man planning? The narratorโ€™s suspicion may be justified, but it is still based partly on appearance and rumor. There is also tension between condemning the people in the scene and recognizing the hardship around them. The closing hope that the listener is โ€œnot involvedโ€ sounds protective, though it may also show how little the narrator can do beyond watching and worrying.
