The lyrics portray a society where people are tied together by shared conditions, yet feel alienated and constrained. The speaker moves through scenes of conformity, exhaustion, poverty, and mistrust. The repeated refrain sounds both like a description of collective life and a weary recognition that people cannot easily escape it.

Several images sharpen this criticism. Taking someone’s hand but feeling only their elbow suggests contact without real closeness. The contrast between eagles and factory-raised chickens implies that something proud or free has been discarded in favor of something ordinary and controlled. “Keeping step” even while kissing suggests that private affection, too, is shaped by pressure to conform. The chain binds people together, while the shared “goal” may be less a chosen purpose than a common predicament.

The song’s tone is bleak, but its targets are not entirely simple. It criticizes institutions and social habits, yet also notices that people in power may be tired, just as those at the bottom are. The lines about belief and doing nothing suggest resignation, though they may also expose how resignation becomes normal. The refrain can therefore sound like solidarity, entrapment, or both: people share a fate, but that does not necessarily mean they have freely chosen the same purpose.
