Never Get Old

The lyrics move between anxiety about time and a loud, defiant wish to live forever. The speaker tells himself to “take care,” reflects on his past, and watches a film-like scene that makes mortality feel close. The repeated claim that he will never grow old sounds less like a calm belief than an attempt to resist fear. Later, the presence of “you” gives life and the future a stronger sense of purpose.

Several images make this tension vivid. A star looking at the speaker and counting down suggests that time is running out, while the “dull red skull” makes the end feel bleak and threatening. The list of things that can never be “enough”—money, drugs, bullets, sex—may imply that pleasure, danger, or material things cannot satisfy the desire to escape aging. Burying bones in marshland evokes death and the body returning to the earth, in contrast with the repeated promise of lasting forever.

The “you” could be a loved person, or someone whose example helps the speaker feel awake and hopeful; the lyrics do not identify them. The song’s certainty about never getting old is therefore ambiguous: it may express joy and youthful confidence, but it may also be a chant against an ending the speaker knows cannot simply be wished away.
