The eight limbs of yoga are called Ashtanga The first limb is the five disciplines of Yama The very first Yama is called Ahimsa The science of kindness or nonviolent resistance The second Yama is known as honesty Satya, which means truth in thought, word, and deed The third Yama of Ashtanga is called Asteya Which means not stealing or taking from your neighbor The fourth limb, Brahmacharya, means self-restraint Harnessing our seed so it won't go to waste The fifth Yama is also important It's called Aparigraha or non-hoarding Aparigraha conquers greed Not acquiring the things that we don't really need Yama is the first branch of the tree Next to the Niyamas, so let us proceed Very good Very good, professor The Niyamas, like the Yamas, are the code of ethics Yogis practice these to become perfected The first Niyama, Saucha, is purity Remembering to keep the mind and body clean The second Niyama is called Santosha Or contentment, an essential element of yoga Remember to appreciate what we have Seeing the perfection of where we're at The third Niyama of Ashtanga is called Tapas Or any austere practice which burns away the dross Tapas is the alchemy which turns lead to gold The sacred fire which purifies the soul Fourth Niyama, Svadhyaya, means self-observation Studying the self which leads to revelation Studying scripture, chanting, contemplation These are all forms of self-examination The fifth Niyama is Ishvara Pranidhana Surrender to a higher power so we no longer Suffer from our own mental condition The next limb in yoga is the yoga position So, so you're a philosopher? Yes The third limb in the ancient science of Ashtanga Is the yoga posture known as Asana Asana, or yoga pose Many people think it means touching your toes But Asana is more about touching the soul Learning to be still in the middle of it all The word Asana literally means seat It's not like a sport where you're trying to compete A regular practice can generate health So that we can pursue the knowledge of the self (Asanas barely so odd, they're inflexible) The fourth limb in the yoga of Ashtanga Is conscious breathing, or Pranayama Prana is the energy inside the breath When we master Prana, then we conquer death Pranayama expands our mental energy So that we can have clarity and vitality Prof- professor Prof- professor Prof- professor The fifth limb of Ashtanga is Pratyahara Withdrawing the senses, pulling back from samsara Moving inward, away from the external Pulling in like a turtle, moving toward the internal So, so you're a philosopher? Yes Very good Very good, professor Sixth limb The sixth limb of Ashtanga is called Dharana Concentrating the mind so that it grows stronger Dharana is known as deep concentration When broken, it becomes Dhyana meditation Seventh limb Meditation is the seventh limb And this is where the real inner journey begins When the mind flows like a river into the sea It merges with the being, which is known as Samadhi Samadhi is the eighth limb In the state of grace, where we can swim In an ocean of bliss, feeling freedom of moksha Kaivalya liberation, which is the goal of yoga To be one with everything as it is To experience truth, consciousness, and bliss This is the undercurrent unifying all things A love without end making the universe sing Like that And you don't quit Yoga is an ancient science designed to liberate the mind
