I was 21, I was carrying a gun
I tried to rob a store and now I'm on the run
They followed close behind me
And the evening turned to night
So I turned into a field
And I turned off all my lights
I slowly cracked my door, I started crawling on the ground
I could tell they were looking, so I didn't make a sound
Til they were far enough away
That I'd never see the day
They would find me, find me
I walked into a town, started working right away
No one asked too many questions
I started saving all my pay
One day I met a girl, her name was Mary Lou
She said she dreamt of having kids and I said I did too
We moved way outside of town, built a small house on a hill
Had a daughter named her Ivy
Had a son and named him Bill
We were far enough away
That I'd never see the day
They would find me, find me
So If you're wondering where I am
I'm out making sure that I don't make those mistakes again
Oh if you're wondering about me
I'm out where the trees grow old and the rivers run free
I'd never been so happy
Couldn't believe my turn of fate
Then I saw lights in my driveway
Which seemed strange cause it was late
I didn't recognizes their faces but I knew how it would end
It was the 21st of August, 10:15pm
They got out, and came right to me
And they called me by my name
I could see my kid's confusion
They could see their father's shame
So if you're wondering where I am
They got me in making sure that I don't make those mistakes again
And if you're wondering about me
I'm here where the beds are cold and nobody runs free
I'm here where the beds are cold and nobody runs free
