Lyrics
I met an old soul singer beside the Union in D.C
Saw my cracked guitar, said he had a little something for me
He said that he had been working, composing a hit song
He had only two guitar strings, they were rusty, but he showed me
It wouldn't be long
Well, he said he'd let me know and then it would be all mine
God told him to give it away, he had already had his time
Well, I smiled politely in the suspicious way I'd learned
I knew no song comes cheaply, it's only if it's earned
He said four on the floor
Rhymes in the chorus
You wanna sing something for someone
You've got to sing it for all of us
Four on the floor
Rhymes in the chorus
You wanna sing something for someone
You've got to sing it for all of us
Well, it's been seven years since then
And I've been driving up these aisles
Trying to find a mainland wrecking its own cattle styles
I've seen one too many drunks in a bar or two too many
I'm feeling old and shaky, I'll take any hope that you give me
Yet now and then when I look around at the bottom of the day
I think of that old soul singer and the things he had to say
I only had his songs, but he was willing to give them all away
He said four on the floor
Rhymes in the chorus
You wanna sing something for someone
You've got to sing it for all of us
Four on the floor
Rhymes in the chorus
You wanna sing something for someone
You've got to sing it for all of us
Now when I walk around, I don't recognize this town
The buildings are all changing, going up or mostly down
The road ain't so romantic, but it's like every book I've read
You've got to be always moving and running that nagging dread
That before you're even living, you're pretty close to being dead
So I guess that I'll keep singing and if song that sticks around
It's all I have to offer up, it's my only holy ground
So I offer up this prayer with the wisest words I've heard
It's all I've ever known, it's all I've ever learned
He said four on the floor
Rhymes in the chorus
You wanna sing something for someone
You've got to sing it for all of us
Four on the floor
Rhymes in the chorus
You wanna sing something for someone
You've got to sing it for all of us
Sing it for all of us
