Pandora's Box

The speaker describes feeling energized by sexual desire and imagining a carefree beach where people are relaxed and openly flirtatious. When he encounters Pandora, he says he feels an excitement he cannot explain, but also worries that speaking too freely may get him criticized. The mood is playful and boastful, though his attraction is mixed with self-consciousness.

Several phrases are humorous or suggestive rather than literal. “In heat” compares human desire to an animal’s mating instinct, while “hoof it” means to go somewhere quickly on foot. The repeated request for Pandora to “open up your door” can sound like a playful invitation to intimacy, but it also treats her attention as something the speaker wants access to. His warning that he could “catch hell” means he expects trouble or criticism.

The song’s teasing language does not make the speaker’s attitude entirely clear. He seems aware that his remarks might offend women, yet he continues to make them, so the reference to women’s liberation may be a joke, a sign of unease, or both. “Pandora” may be a name for a particular woman, or a suggestive figure of desire; the lyrics do not explain which.
