Lyrics meaning

The singer is trying to carry on after losing someone he loves. He considers going out and calling another woman, as if ordinary activities might help him move on, but both attempts remind him how absent his former partner feels. The emotion shifts from determination to sadness and self-awareness: he admits that he still loves this person and cannot simply replace them.

โ€œDo the townโ€ means go out and enjoy the places and activities a town offers. Yet the crowded street feels โ€œemptyโ€ without the person he misses, showing that grief can change how familiar surroundings feel. When he calls someone else, he cannot think of what to say; this suggests his attention is still fixed on the relationship he has lost. โ€œWho am I kiddinโ€™?โ€ is an informal way of saying โ€œWho am I fooling?โ€โ€”he recognizes that his claim to find somebody new is not sincere.

The repeated idea that he will live his life loving the lost person can sound devoted, but also resigned. He may believe that no one else can take their place, or he may be speaking from the intensity of fresh heartbreak rather than making a settled prediction about his whole future. The lyrics leave open whether he will eventually adapt; for now, he feels unable to do so.
