Lyrics meaning

The song follows Zangra through a long military career, from lieutenant to general, as he waits for an enemy whose arrival might make him a hero. Years pass, but he remains bored and emotionally out of step with the people he meets. At the end, the enemy finally appears, when Zangra is too old to fight. The mood shifts from dry comedy to regret: the chance he has been waiting for comes too late.

The repeated image of the fort overlooking a plain makes Zangraโ€™s life feel like one long watch. His imagined heroic future contrasts with the uneventful present. His horses also recur as a motif: when others speak of love, he thinks or talks about horses, suggesting how narrowly his attention is fixed on military life. The changing people he visits in townโ€”from groups of women to Consuelo and later Pedroโ€™s widowโ€”mark the passage of time.

Zangra may be mocked for choosing an imagined future over real relationships, but the song also invites sympathy. He seems to believe that recognition will come through one decisive moment, and he waits so long that the moment loses its meaning for him. The ending does not explain whether he could have chosen differently; it leaves us with the irony that the event he desired arrives just after his opportunity has passed.
