Lyrics meaning
The song tells of a sad older man who sings to a bird beside a river. He warns it not to fly too high, saying that the sun is dangerous and no one will help if it gets into trouble. His concern seems shaped by his own past: he says he knows what can happen because it happened to him. By morning, the bird is dead, and the man is left grieving, though he can only guess that it was the same bird.
The warning to โfly not so highโ can mean more than avoiding physical danger. It may suggest that reaching too far, dreaming too boldly, or taking risks can lead to disappointment. The โred sandโ and distant land in the manโs song evoke a faraway place and a happiness he never found. Meanwhile, the cars passing without stopping make the man seem isolated and unnoticed.
The ending is deliberately uncertain: the dead bird may be the one that listened to the man, but he only believes it is. His warning might be loving advice based on painful experience, yet it also sounds like a belief that ambition is unsafe. The song can therefore be heard both as a sorrowful tale about loss and as a question about whether protecting someone from danger also means discouraging them from reaching for more.
