Dark Hollow

The speaker is heartbroken and wants to escape a place that keeps reminding him of someone he cannot have. He would rather be alone in a bleak, dark place than stay in the city, where he is stuck in a small room thinking about her. As the song continues, the reason for his pain becomes clearer: she belongs to someone else, and he believes she will never be his. He responds by deciding to leave, presenting departure as a way to cope with grief.

The “dark hollow” suggests isolation and sadness, but it may also seem preferable to the emotional pain of staying. The freight train represents movement away from the speaker’s current life; asking it to carry him “far” gives his escape a sense of urgency.
