The song follows a couple torn apart by imprisonment and forced exile. Michael is punished for taking food during famine and for rebelling against the authorities. Mary is left behind with their child, while he is sent overseas. The emotions move from love and shared hope to separation, grief, and a stubborn wish that they may meet again.

Several images make this loss vivid. The “small free birds” suggest the freedom the couple once had, while “our love was on the wing” presents their hopes as something able to rise and travel. By contrast, prison walls and the ship waiting in the bay make confinement and departure feel immediate. “Raise our child with dignity” means more than simply keeping the child safe: Michael asks Mary to preserve the child’s self-respect despite their hardship.

The repeated loneliness of Athenry gives the landscape an emotional weight, as if familiar fields have changed because the couple is separated. The falling star may suggest the end of hope, but it could also simply mark a sad moment as the ship leaves. Mary’s promise to wait, hope, and pray does not tell us whether Michael will return. The ending therefore holds both devotion and uncertainty.
